Common Pests
Ants are mainly a nuisance pest rather than a health problem. Ants cause problems primarily when they forage in buildings for food or water and when they construct nests in buildings and gardens. When searching for food, they are attracted to a wide range of foodstuffs. They will also search indoors for water during dry periods. When desirable items are found many species will recruit fellow nest mates to help gather the food and return it to the nest.
Spiders are predators, feeding mainly on insects. Spiders are considered beneficial because of the large number of insects they prey on, including a number of pest species. All spiders have venom and are therefore venomous. However, most spiders are harmless to people. They are very shy and usually remain hidden in undisturbed areas. Many are active only at night. They are not aggressive and they will try to escape when confronted. Few spiders bite, even when coaxed.
Cockroaches live and feed in unhygienic places such as sewers and drains, or feed on garbage that may be contaminated. These insects are cold-blooded and thrive in warm, humid conditions. However cockroach will make their home where every they find food, moisture and shelter. You can find them around refrigerators, dishwashers, washer/dryers, stoves and water heaters.
Termites avoid light and rarely come out into the open. Often termites are found within timbers where they leave a wafer thin layer to protect themselves from the outside environment. Termite damage is invisible, and is very costly to repair. Damage is not covered under your general insurance.
Bed bugs move quickly and can hide in narrow cracks and crevices, making detection very difficult. They are rust brown in color and change to a deeper red brown after feeding.Bedbugs shelter in a variety of dark locations, close to where people sleep. These include under mattresses, floorboards, paintings and carpets, behind skirting, in various cracks and crevices of walls, within bed frames and other furniture, and behind loose wallpaper.
Wasps are regarded as nuisance pests or a threat to health. They are regarded as scavengers extending the damage caused by other pests and diseases. The need to collect wood to construct nests means that wasps may damage the wooden fabric of buildings, fences and even perhaps garden furniture. It is the ability of wasps to cause painful stings that concerns most people.
Fleas are external parasites, which during the adult stage of their life cycle suck blood from animals, including humans. Flea bites cause irritation and can transmit disease.
Rats and mice are well adapted to living in close association with humans. Their presence is undesirable due to their ability to physically damage structures, spoil and contaminate food and transmit diseases to humans. They may live and nest within buildings indefinitely, provided they have access to food and water. Being creatures of habit, they will travel the same routes to the food sources therefore assisting us in the most appropriate location to place baits. Rats and mice are most active d
